Hotel Agava

Opatija, Kvarner, CroatiaOpatija is the oldest and most renowned tourist centre in Croatia. It was considered the pearl of the Austro-Hungarian Riviera at the end of the nineteenth century and was a popular tourist destination among Austrian and European High Society. It was patronized by emperors, famous artists and celebrities like Wilhelm II, Franz Joseph, Empress Sissy, Gustav Mahler, Isadora Duncan, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov and many others. The opulence of the numerous villas, dazzling neoclassic and art nouveau hotels which is located in luxuriously trimmed gardens and parks bears witness to the town's glorious past.

St. Jacob's Church, a Benedictine colony which was built around 1420, is situated in Opatija's park. This abbey later gave its name to the whole city (Opatija means Abbey). Walking through the park, you will have the opportunity to see a vast number of camellias, magnolias, palm trees and other subtropical plants. You can also see the Villa Angiolina, the first summer residence in Opatija, which was built in 1844.
